This course will provide the student with the most relevant and widely used skills, techniques and interventions in addictions counseling. Effective counseling skills such as active listening, attending, building rapport, and demonstrating empathy will be reviewed. The course will also review the importance of self-awareness as a primary tool for the counselor. Students will examine the Disease Model of addiction as a foundation for client education. The skills presented in this course are those primarily used in Individual Counseling settings; however, there will be a short discussion on the effectiveness of mutual self-help support as an adjunct to primary, professional counseling.
